Parenting Tips for Healthy, Effective Parenting
From the desk of Parenting Coach and Trainer Marty Wolner: Striving for healthy and effective parenting. | Many parents wonder if there's a "secret" to healthy and effective parenting, and I tell them that the secret is that effective parents give kids what they need, rather than what they want.
Knowing what kids need is the start and in order to raise emotionally and relationally healthy kids, parents need to better understand who a child is and what parenting tools are most effective in raising a responsible kid.
As an parenting coach and family professionals trainer for the last 16 years, I have partnered with hundreds of parents, teachers and other family professionals to strive for a better understanding of children, to affirm their challenges, offer nurturing and supply them with more effective tools to manage these relationships.
To raise a responsible kid, parents need to be aware of and understand:
The
nature of children and what impacts behavior
Emotional Intelligence - why it matters more the IQ
The power of relationships and how to improve them
How parenting styles affect raising a responsible kid
How parents and other adults can better communicate with a child
How to make a child feel lovable and capable
How to set limits and impose healthy consequences
The adolescent brain - what are they thinking?
What is overindulgence and how does it impact a child?

Bring on the "perfect" parents!
There are no "perfect" parents, just as there are no "perfect" children. Striving for perfection in all areas of parenting can only cause frustration and stress. Parents are given numerous chances each and every day to provide healthy authoritative parenting for their kids, so there are going to be successes and also times when a parent may be able to be more intentional and provide healthier nurturing and structure.
Parental responsibilities fall into two areas, "caring" and "executive." When in the caring role, a parent may provide love and healthy emotional nurturing, while also providing food, water, shelter and safety. While in the executive role, a parent may provide healthy structure, effective discipline and learning. Parents may experience differing degrees of comfort with each of these roles, and may be more or less effective in their approach.
Help is available and there is a difference. While most parenting educators and coaches will offer what they believe are effective parenting tools, most miss a big piece of the picture, and hence can only offer hit-and-miss strategies. Before deciding what parenting tools are most effective, parents need to know who a child is, his or her temperament, stage of development, maturity level, personality, and social connections to then begin to work on effective tools.
I'm here to help. One-on-one consultation is available to work with parents to assess the nature of their child, and then determine what parenting tools may be most effective. Whether it's healthy communication, effective discipline, self esteem building, coping with anger, or dealing with teenagers, I have helped hundreds of parents.
